Happy birthday. I should do a post of my own in praise of your blog and its sheer unrelenting consistency. Most of the stories have little direct relevance to me of course, but it's great to see a local blog keep on doing what it's good at.

I have known Reg Mann since my early childhood in Glossop, having been school friends with his sons Ian and Graham. Reg was the first person who really inspired me to take an interest in politics, particularly during the dark days of Thatcherism when he and his colleagues in Derbyshire County Council showed that another way was possible, as well as raising Glossop's profile and promoting its interests down there in Matlock. A hugely intelligent yet down to earth and likeale guy who put so much effort into fighting for Glossop and for social justice over the years. Reg's untimely passing is a great shock and sadness, a loss to Glossop and means that there is one less decent person in the world on the side of social justice. RIP.

I also received one of these calls on Monday night (27/04/09), and phoned BT after to check account - it was fine. I phoned the police to report and they said that it was good I didn't give any details over the phone to this man. This hasn't been very well publicised though - I found very few news articles about this particular scam on the net.

I would like to add to the news of
Martin Doughty no longer being with us, my thoughts and prayers, to his remaining family, and all that knew him.

I was only on nodding terms with Martin usually accompanied with a quick Hi or Hello.

Only living down the way from him, I would sometimes see him out walking or stood at the bus stop.
For the chair of Natural England, that is the type of thing you like to see. Someone who practised what he preached.

He was remembered in our prayers at Morning Worship this morning.

To finish!!

Why is house price astronomical inflation always seen as a sign of a good economy and prosperity?
Is it not a sign of a bad pyramid scheme, as those at the top have houses worth a lot of money virtually or paid and those recently entering have far too much debt and will never pay it off?
When it comes to pay rises, Alistair Darling wants to curb them at 3.3% to tackle inflation-Yet all those years the government let house price inflation rocket up to Mars, without putting any controls on it. Pay rises are absolutely peanuts compared to that of housing inflation, which includes Buying and renting.
Now the housing market is prices are falling with the exception of rented housing, would it not be a good ides to introduce controls to ensure from now on the prices must be frozen and not exceed any inflation figure by 2% minus of the RPI. The buy to let scheme and multi home ownership should be abolished as there is a housing shortage crisis. In times of water shortage is not water rationed, doe they not ban the watering of lawns and cleaning cars-Then why is not this principle applied to Housing?
The £60 billion that was raised by the sale of Council homes, should we not have this back from Central government to use for building social housing?
The whole way we do things in this country needs to change!
